Community Gardens at Oak Grove has been fortunate to receive funding for a variety of important garden projects. Made possible through a grant from the Ethel Verney Fund, this pavilion provides a place to sort weekly food donations in rain or sun, and a shady spot for picnics and outdoor meetings. We are also grateful to have such a nice spot to rest after working in the sometimes hot garden!
The Ethel L. Verney fund was established in 2014 as a result of a $4 million bequest from Ethel L. Verney for “relief and support of people living in poverty” in southwestern Pennsylvania. Each year, more than $250,000 is available to fund grants to synod ministries that fulfill the bequest’s criteria. Grants typically range from $10,000 to $40,000, and applying organizations must be ministries of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Synod – its congregations, agencies, and institutions. Food and meal programs, educational events, and outreach through worship or youth programing are the types of programs/needs that have received grants in past years.
Thank you to the Ethel Verney Fund!
