The Watering System

We are fortunate to have an excellent watering system at the garden. There are hose stations on both sides of the garden, with long hoses that can reach to every plot. And we sure have needed them so far this year with high temperatures!

We typically receive the highest temperatures during prime growing season in July and August. Even though summer is also time for the highest precipitation, our gardens need additional water. In our area, vegetable gardens need an average of one inch of water per week for optimal production – whether from rain or irrigation.

We check the soil for moisture by digging an inch or two into the soil and scooping up a small handful. The soil is then squeezed in a fist to make a ball. Open the fingers and the Rule of Thumb is: if the soil stays in a ball, no watering is needed. If it crumbles or falls apart easily, it’s time to water.
